Sabari Review: Varalaxmi Shines, But Thrills Fall Short

In the latest Telugu psychological thriller, “Sabari,” Varalaxmi Sarathkumar takes on the role of Sanjana, a single mother facing unexpected challenges. Directed by Anil Katz and released on May 3, 2024, this film aims to deliver suspense and intrigue.

Sanjana, portrayed by Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, is a single mother struggling to secure a job due to her incomplete education. Her life takes a turn when she discovers a shocking truth about her daughter, Riya, played by Baby Krithika. With the help of her lawyer friend Rahul (Shashank), Sanjana delves into a series of events that change their lives forever.

Highlights:

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar delivers a compelling performance, bringing depth to her character’s struggles and emotions. As a mother concerned for her daughter’s safety, her portrayal is top-notch.

Mime Gopi impresses with his performance in a significant role, while Shashank delivers a decent performance as Varalaxmi’s friend. The film starts on an intriguing note, drawing the audience into its world effectively.

Weak Points:

Despite its promising premise, “Sabari” fails to provide the necessary thrills expected from a psychological thriller. The predictable plot twist and lack of innovative storytelling leave the audience wanting more.

While the first half has its moments, the second half loses steam, with the narrative failing to engage. The antagonist’s motives are poorly developed, contributing to the film’s overall downfall.

Certain scenes appear exaggerated and fail to resonate with the audience, while the climax lacks emotional depth and fails to be engaging.

Technical Aspects:

The music by Gopi Sundar and background score fail to leave a lasting impact, while cinematography by Rahul Shrivastav and Nani Chamidisetty is decent. The editing could have been tighter to improve the pacing.

Direction by Anil Katz falls short of expectations, with the film failing to capitalize on its intriguing premise. A stronger screenplay could have elevated the film’s impact.

“Sabari” offers an interesting concept but falls short of delivering a satisfying experience. Despite Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s commendable performance, the film lacks the necessary thrills to keep the audience engaged. With better execution and a more gripping screenplay, “Sabari” could have been a much better film.
